Ganga

Ganga
Goddess of the Ganges River. In Vedic myth the Ganges was the most sacred of all the rivers in India. It was formerly the custom for pilgrims to start from the source of the river at Gangotri and to walk down the left bank to the mouth at Ganga-sagara, and then to return to the source by the right bank. This pilgrimage, which takes six years to accomplish, is called Pradakshini, and great merit was acquired by it. The guide to persons undertaking these pilgrimages was known as a Gangaputra. The sacredness of this river is due to the belief that it flows from the toe of Vishnu. Its waters are said to hold great curative properties.
